How to Activate a Chime Card: Step-by-Step

May 29, 2026

Your new Chime card just arrived in the mail. Before you can tap it at a register or pull cash from an ATM, you need to activate it. The good news: the chime activate card process takes about two minutes and you have two easy options. This guide walks you through both methods, covers replacement cards, and explains what to do if something goes wrong.

What You Need Before You Start

Before activating your Chime card, make sure you have:

  • Your physical Chime card (check the back for the 3-digit CVV)
  • Access to your Chime account login
  • A four-digit PIN you want to set
  • Your phone (for app activation) or access to a phone (for the call-in method)

You cannot activate a card that was reported lost or stolen. If that applies, request a replacement first through the Chime app.

How to Activate a Chime Card in the App

This is the fastest method and the one Chime recommends. Here are the steps:

  1. Open the Chime app on your smartphone.
  2. Log in with your username and password.
  3. Tap the Settings icon (usually in the top corner or bottom navigation).
  4. Select Chime Card from the menu.
  5. Tap the Activate button.
  6. Enter the CVV from the back of your card when prompted.
  7. Set and confirm your 4-digit PIN.

Once you confirm your PIN, activation is complete. Your card is ready to use immediately.

How to Activate a Chime Card by QR Code

Chime cards often ship in an envelope that includes a QR code. You can scan that code with your phone camera to be taken directly to the activation screen. The steps after that are the same as the in-app method above: enter your CVV and set your PIN. If you no longer have the envelope, use the app method instead.

How to Activate a Chime Card by Phone

If you prefer to activate over the phone, or if you do not have access to the app, call Chime customer service at (844) 244-6363. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The automated system will ask you to:

  1. Verify your identity (name, address, last four of Social Security Number, or account details)
  2. Confirm your card number
  3. Create a PIN

Once the system confirms activation, your card is live. For more details on reaching Chime support, see our guide on how to contact Chime customer service.

How to Activate a Chime Replacement Card

Activating a replacement card follows exactly the same steps as activating a new card. Use the app or call the customer service number. Once you activate your new card, your old card is automatically deactivated — you do not need to take any separate steps to cancel it.

If you ordered a replacement but it has not arrived yet, your virtual card in the Chime app remains active for online purchases and mobile wallet payments while you wait.

How to Set or Change Your Chime Card PIN

You set your PIN during activation. If you need to change it later, here is how:

  1. Open the Chime app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Chime Card.
  4. Select Change PIN and follow the prompts.

Your PIN must be four digits. Avoid obvious sequences like 1234 or your birth year for security.

Using Your Card While Waiting for Physical Activation

Chime gives you a virtual card the moment your account is approved, before any physical card arrives. You can add the virtual card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and start spending right away. The virtual card number is separate from your physical card number, which adds an extra layer of security for online purchases.

For more on the different card types Chime offers, see our guide on what is a Chime card.

Troubleshooting: What to Do If Chime Card Activation Fails

Here are the most common issues and fixes:

Wrong CVV entered: Double-check the three-digit number on the signature strip on the back of your card. It is different from your card number.

Card locked after too many failed attempts: If activation fails five times, Chime will lock the card and you will not be able to activate it. Contact Chime support at (844) 244-6363 to request a new card.

Card not yet in the system: If you just received the card and the app says it is not found, wait a few hours and try again. Occasionally there is a short delay between when a card ships and when it appears in the system.

App not loading: Check your internet connection, update the Chime app to the latest version, or try the phone activation method instead.

Account issue: If your account is restricted for any reason, activation will fail until the restriction is resolved. Contact Chime support to check your account status.

How Long Does a New Chime Card Take to Arrive?

Chime ships new and replacement cards within 7-10 business days by standard delivery. Expedited shipping is sometimes available for replacement cards. Check the Chime app when you request a replacement to see current shipping options.

If you need cash before your card arrives, Chime's free ATM network is accessible through the virtual card via mobile wallet at participating ATMs. For ATM locations, see our guide on Chime ATM locations and withdrawal limits.

Is It Safe to Activate a Chime Card Over the Phone?

Yes. Chime's phone activation line is an automated system run by Chime directly. You call the official number — (844) 244-6363 — and verify your own identity. Never share your card details or PIN with anyone who calls you claiming to be from Chime. Chime will not proactively call you to ask for your PIN or CVV.

After Activation: Tips to Keep Your Card Secure

Now that your card is active, a few habits keep your account safer:

  • Enable transaction notifications in the Chime app so you see every charge in real time.
  • Use your virtual card for online purchases whenever possible.
  • If you lose your card, use the app to instantly block it rather than waiting to call support.
  • Review your transaction history weekly and report any unfamiliar charges through the app immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate my Chime card for the first time?

Open the Chime app, go to Settings, tap Chime Card, and tap Activate. You will be asked to enter the CVV from the back of your card and set a 4-digit PIN. The whole process takes about two minutes. Alternatively, call (844) 244-6363 and follow the automated prompts.

Can I activate a Chime card without the app?

Yes. Call Chime customer service at (844) 244-6363 any time, day or night. The automated system will walk you through identity verification, card confirmation, and PIN setup without needing the app.

What happens if I enter the wrong CVV too many times?

After five failed activation attempts, Chime locks the card and it cannot be activated. You will need to contact Chime support to request a replacement card. This is a fraud-prevention measure to protect your account.

How do I know my Chime card is activated?

After completing activation in the app, you will see a confirmation screen. If you activated by phone, the automated system announces that activation is complete. You can also check the card status in Settings under Chime Card in the app — an active card shows your card details rather than an Activate button.
