What ID Do You Need for Western Union?

April 28, 2026

Whether you are sending money for the first time or showing up to claim a transfer, Western Union requires a valid government-issued photo ID before they release any cash. The right document depends on whether you are sending or receiving, the amount of the transfer, and the country you are in.

This guide walks through every ID type Western Union accepts in the US and overseas, plus a few less-known fallbacks for people who are still building their paperwork.

Why Western Union Asks for ID

Anti-money-laundering laws (AML) and Know-Your-Customer rules (KYC) require Western Union to verify identity for any transfer. The same rules apply to MoneyGram, Wise, and every other licensed money transmitter. The check protects you from fraud and protects Western Union from regulatory penalties.

Most US transfers under $1,000 require minimal ID, but the threshold drops for cash-pickup recipients and certain corridors. Plan to bring an ID even for a small send.

Accepted IDs as a Sender (US)

The following are accepted at most US Western Union agent locations and inside the app:

  • US driver's license (current, not expired)
  • State-issued photo ID card (DMV non-driver ID)
  • US passport or passport card
  • Permanent resident card (Green Card)
  • Military ID
  • Tribal ID issued by a federally recognized tribe
  • Employment Authorization Document (EAD card): accepted at most agent locations
  • Foreign passport with a US visa stamp: accepted, sometimes paired with a secondary ID

The ID has to be current. Expired documents, including expired driver's licenses, are not accepted even with a renewal receipt.

Accepted IDs as a Recipient (US)

When you pick up cash, Western Union compares your ID name against the name the sender entered. Every word has to match. Bring:

  • US driver's license or state ID
  • US passport
  • Permanent resident card
  • Foreign passport (some agent locations also require a secondary ID)
  • Matricula consular (accepted at most US locations for Mexican consular cards)

If your name on the transfer does not match your ID exactly (middle name missing, "Jr" missing, hyphen difference), the agent may refuse to release the money. Call the sender and have them edit the recipient name in the app before you go to pick it up.

Accepted IDs Overseas

Each country sets its own rules. The following are commonly accepted at Western Union agent locations worldwide:

  • National ID card (most countries issue one)
  • Passport (always works, anywhere in the world)
  • Driver's license (most countries, but not all)
  • Voter ID card (accepted in India, Mexico, Philippines, and many African countries)
  • Refugee or asylum documents (accepted in many EU and African countries)

A valid passport is the universal fallback. If you are in a country and you do not know what counts, bring your passport and you will almost always be fine.

ID for the App vs the Counter

Signing up in the Western Union app requires a photo of one of the documents above plus a selfie for biometric matching. The app uses computer vision to verify the photo matches your face and that the document is not damaged or counterfeit.

App-based verification usually approves accounts within minutes for US-issued IDs and within 1 to 24 hours for foreign documents. Once verified, you do not have to re-verify for future transfers unless your limit increases.

What Happens for Larger Transfers

Sending more than $3,000 in a single transaction usually triggers extra documentation:

  • Source-of-funds proof: recent pay stub, bank statement, or tax return showing the money is yours
  • Purpose-of-transfer details: typed-in explanation of why you are sending (rent, family support, contractor payment, etc.)
  • Secondary ID: a second document, usually a Social Security card or utility bill, to confirm address

The app prompts for these documents automatically when your transfer hits the threshold. Have them ready as photos before you start the send so you do not get stuck mid-transfer.

Special Cases

A few less-known scenarios:

  • Sending without a Social Security Number: Western Union accepts ITINs and many foreign passports. If you are an immigrant or international student and you do not have an SSN, the app may ask for additional KYC including a US visa stamp or a US address utility bill.
  • Picking up cash for someone else: generally not allowed. The recipient name on the transfer must match the photo ID of the person picking up the cash. Some larger agent locations allow notarized power-of-attorney pickups, but call ahead.
  • Lost ID at the counter: without ID, the agent cannot release money. Have the sender cancel the transfer and re-send to your bank account or mobile wallet using the app.

Building Credit While You Send Money

If you are an immigrant or someone new to the US financial system, Western Union transfers do not build a US credit file because they do not report to the credit bureaus. To start building US credit, the Self Visa® Credit Card accepts ITINs and EADs and has high approval rates for people with no US credit history. It reports to all three bureaus.

For people without an SSN, the Current Build Card is another option. There is no credit check, no minimum deposit, and the card reports to Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a foreign passport at Western Union in the US?

Yes. Foreign passports are accepted at most US Western Union agent locations and inside the app. Some locations may ask for a secondary ID if the transfer is over $1,000.

What if my ID is expired?

Expired IDs are not accepted, even with a current renewal receipt. Renew your driver's license, passport, or state ID before sending or picking up. If you must use an expired document for a critical transfer, call Western Union customer service first to confirm any one-time exception.

Do I need an ID to receive money under $300?

In the US, recipients almost always need a valid ID even for small transfers. Some corridors allow under-$300 pickups with a transfer reference number and a verbal answer to a security question, but the policy varies by agent. Bring a photo ID to be safe.

What ID does Western Union accept if I do not have a Social Security Number?

Western Union accepts foreign passports, US visa stamps, ITINs, EAD cards, Green Cards, and consular IDs (matricula consular). You do not need an SSN to send or receive money on most US corridors.
