Eligibility
Must be 18 or older, a US resident with a US checking account. Savings and prepaid accounts are not accepted. Requires a consistent weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly or monthly direct deposit. Work is verified by GPS or employer email, or by uploaded timesheets. Not compatible with disability pay or unemployment wages. EarnIn's product page cites a $320 minimum in direct deposits per pay period. Lightning Speed pricing differs in Indiana, Florida and New York, and EarnIn does not publish those state numbers.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • EarnIn checks your real hours with GPS or an uploaded timesheet. That means it can offer you money mid-shift, not just guess from your last paycheck.
  • EarnIn posts its Lightning Speed fees by transfer amount right on its site, so you know the exact cost before you pay it.
  • A free transfer option exists if you can wait. EarnIn says it usually arrives in one to a few business days.
  • Cash Out charges no mandatory fees, no interest, and does not run a credit check.
  • Tips are optional every time you cash out. EarnIn does not require one to use Cash Out.
  • Balance Shield sends free low-balance alerts. It can also trigger an automatic Cash Out to help you dodge an overdraft fee.

Cons

  • You need a steady direct deposit schedule: weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly. That schedule must go into a linked checking account. Gig workers paid on and off, or by check, may not qualify.
  • Your daily access tops out at $150 and your pay period cap is $1,000. That may be lower than what you have actually earned.
  • Getting cash fast is not free. Lightning Speed fees run from $3.99 to $8.99 each time, and they add up if you use it often.
  • EarnIn's own pages disagree on how long a free transfer takes. Some say one to two business days, others say one to three.
  • New users do not start at the $150 daily cap. EarnIn says new users average an $85 Daily Max. Your own limit can land anywhere from $0 to $150, based on your history.
  • EarnIn shows a tip prompt each time you cash out. It is optional, but you have to decline it every time.
