How to Freeze Your ChexSystems Report: A Step-by-Step Guide

May 23, 2026

Identity theft in banking is more common than most people realize. Someone can use your name and Social Security number to open a checking account, rack up overdrafts, and leave you with a damaged ChexSystems record that follows you for five years. A security freeze on your ChexSystems file can stop that from happening.

Placing a freeze is free, takes less than 10 minutes online, and does not affect your credit score. Here is exactly how to do it.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather the following:

  • Full legal name and current mailing address
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Government-issued photo ID number (driver's license, state ID, or military ID)
  • An email address (for the online method)

You will receive a personal identification number (PIN) after placing the freeze. Store it somewhere safe. You will need it to lift or thaw the freeze later.

Step 1: Understand What a Freeze Does

A ChexSystems security freeze restricts financial institutions from accessing your ChexSystems file when you apply to open a new deposit account. If a bank tries to pull your report during the application process, they receive a notice that your file is frozen and the account opening is blocked.

This protects you in two key situations. First, if your personal information has been exposed in a data breach or stolen, a freeze prevents fraudsters from opening accounts in your name. Second, if you simply want to limit who can view your banking history, a freeze gives you that control. This is distinct from a credit freeze vs fraud alert on your credit bureau files, which is a separate process.

A freeze does not affect existing accounts. Banks that already have a relationship with you can still access your file for account management purposes.

Step 2: Place Your Freeze

ChexSystems offers three methods to place a security freeze, and all are free under the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.

Online (fastest): Go to chexsystems.com and navigate to the Security Freeze section. Complete the identity verification form with your personal details. ChexSystems typically processes online requests within 24 hours and mails you a PIN.

By phone: Call 1-800-887-7652. Security freeze representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Central Time. An automated system is available 24 hours a day if you prefer not to speak with a representative.

By mail: Write a request letter or use the form at chexsystems.com. Include copies of your photo ID and proof of address. Mail to: Chex Systems, Inc., Attn: Security Freeze Department, PO Box 583399, Minneapolis, MN 55458. You can also email your request to chexsystems.cr@fisglobal.com.

Step 3: Receive and Store Your PIN

After your freeze is processed, ChexSystems mails a PIN to your address on file. This can take a few business days even if you applied online.

Do not lose this PIN. You will need it every time you want to temporarily lift (thaw) the freeze or remove it permanently. If you lose your PIN, you will need to go through an identity verification process to get a replacement, which adds time.

Step 4: Open a Bank Account While the Freeze Is Active

Here is a practical consideration: if your ChexSystems report is frozen, you may run into problems opening a new account at a traditional bank, even if that is your goal. Some banks that don't use ChexSystems can still be an option, since they skip the ChexSystems check entirely regardless of freeze status.

Current does not use ChexSystems screening for new accounts, so a freeze on your report will not affect your ability to sign up. This makes it a useful option if you need banking access while your freeze is in place.

Step 5: Temporarily Lift the Freeze When You Need To

If you want to apply for a new checking account at a bank that uses ChexSystems, you will need to temporarily thaw your freeze first. You can lift it for a specific date range or for a specific institution.

Log in to your ChexSystems account at chexsystems.com, navigate to the Security Freeze section, and choose "Temporarily Lift." You will enter your PIN, specify the dates, and submit. The thaw typically takes effect within hours.

If you used the phone or mail method, you can also thaw via phone at 1-800-887-7652 or by mailing a request with your PIN included.

Remember to re-freeze after your application window closes if ongoing protection is your goal.

Step 6: Remove the Freeze Permanently

If you decide you no longer need the freeze, you can remove it at any time through the same channels: online, by phone, or by mail. You will need your PIN. The removal is permanent, so be sure before you proceed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Freezing only ChexSystems but not other consumer reporting agencies. Banks may also pull reports from Early Warning Services or Equifax. A complete freeze across all relevant agencies gives you fuller protection. Understanding the difference between a credit freeze vs credit lock can help you decide what level of protection makes sense for your broader credit file.

Forgetting to thaw before applying. If you apply for a new account while your ChexSystems file is frozen, most banks will deny the application automatically. Thaw at least one business day before you apply.

Assuming a freeze fixes your existing record. A freeze blocks new inquiries but does not remove or change anything already on your report. If you have negative entries, you will need to dispute your ChexSystems record or wait for them to age off. You can also start by reviewing your ChexSystems report for free to see exactly what is on file before taking action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a ChexSystems freeze cost anything?

No. Placing, lifting, and removing a ChexSystems security freeze is completely free for consumers under federal law. There is no fee for any of the three methods: online, phone, or mail. This has been the case since the passage of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act in 2018.

Will a ChexSystems freeze affect my credit score?

No. ChexSystems is a separate reporting agency that tracks banking and deposit account history. It is not connected to the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion), and placing a freeze does not affect your FICO score or any credit scoring model. Your credit report and ChexSystems file are entirely independent.

How long does it take for the freeze to go into effect?

For online requests, the freeze typically goes into effect within one business day and ChexSystems sends your PIN by mail within a few days after that. Phone requests generally follow the same timeline. Mail requests can take five to seven business days from the date ChexSystems receives your letter. Plan ahead if you are freezing in response to a known data breach.

Can I freeze my ChexSystems report if I have never had a checking account?

Yes. You do not need an existing ChexSystems file to request a freeze. If no file exists for you, ChexSystems will create a suppressed record so that any future attempt to open an account in your name is blocked. This is sometimes called a "proactive freeze" and is a reasonable step for anyone who has experienced identity theft or whose personal data has been exposed.
