How to Receive Money from MoneyGram (Step-by-Step)

April 27, 2026

Picking up a MoneyGram transfer can take less than ten minutes if you have the right details. Miss one piece of information, though, and your sender's payment can sit unclaimed for weeks. Here's exactly how to receive money from MoneyGram, what to bring, and what to do when something goes wrong.

What You Need Before You Pick Up

Before you head to a MoneyGram location or open the app, the sender needs to give you two things: the eight-digit Reference Number (also called the MTCN or Authorization Number) and the exact full name they used when sending. Both are case- and spelling-sensitive. If your legal name is Maria Esther Rodriguez and the sender wrote Maria Rodriguez, the agent may decline to release the funds.

You will also need a valid government-issued photo ID. In the United States, that means a driver's license, state ID, U.S. passport, or permanent resident card. International customers can typically use a passport or national ID. The name on your ID must match the recipient name on the transfer.

For transfers above roughly $1,000, MoneyGram may ask for a secondary form of ID, your address, your phone number, and the purpose of the transfer. This is required by anti-money-laundering (AML) rules, so don't skip it.

Option 1: Pick Up Cash at a MoneyGram Location

MoneyGram operates at more than 350,000 agent locations worldwide, including Walmart, CVS, and many grocery stores. To find the nearest one, use the MoneyGram locator at moneygram.com/locator or call 1-800-MONEYGRAM.

At the counter, fill out the "Receive Money" form (the agent has paper forms; the app version is faster). Hand over the form, your ID, and the reference number. Most cash pickups complete in five to ten minutes once you reach the counter, assuming the sender has already paid.

If the location runs out of cash for a large transfer, you may be asked to come back later or take a partial payout. Ask before you wait.

Option 2: Receive Money to Your Bank Account

If the sender chose "Bank Deposit," the funds land directly in the account on file. Domestic U.S. bank deposits typically post within a few hours but can take one to three business days, depending on the receiving bank. International bank deposits can take three to five business days.

You don't need to do anything to claim a bank deposit, but check the deposit description for the MoneyGram reference. If the funds don't show up after three business days, call MoneyGram support with the reference number.

Option 3: Mobile Wallet Pickup

In many countries, MoneyGram sends to mobile wallets like M-Pesa, GCash, or bKash. The funds appear in your wallet automatically, usually within minutes. You'll get a text confirmation once the deposit clears.

If you don't see the wallet credit within an hour, log into your wallet to check pending transactions. If it's still missing, contact your wallet provider first, then MoneyGram if needed.

Fees and Exchange Rates

The sender pays the upfront fee, but MoneyGram earns a margin on the exchange rate when funds are converted. If you're receiving in a different currency than what was sent, expect to receive 1% to 4% less than the mid-market rate, depending on the corridor. Higher-volume corridors like U.S. to Mexico tend to have tighter spreads.

Most cash pickups are free for the receiver. Bank deposits sometimes carry a small receiving fee from your bank. Mobile wallet pickups are usually free for the receiver.

What If the Money Isn't There Yet?

A few common reasons a transfer hasn't arrived:

  • The sender hasn't completed payment, especially if they used a bank account, which can take one to two business days to clear
  • The transfer was flagged for compliance review (more common for first-time large transfers)
  • The sender used the wrong recipient name or country
  • The pickup location is closed or out of cash

Use the "Track a Transfer" tool at moneygram.com or call MoneyGram customer support with your reference number. If you're a U.S. recipient, the support line is 1-800-666-3947.

Building Credit While You Manage Cross-Border Money

If you receive money from family abroad regularly, you're already managing a real budget. The next step is building U.S. credit so you can stop relying on cash and qualify for better rates on cards and loans. The Current Build Card doesn't require a Social Security number to start, which makes it a strong fit for newcomers and recipients of international remittances. Firstcard also offers credit-building tools designed specifically for people with thin or no U.S. credit files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a bank account to receive MoneyGram?

No. Cash pickup is the most common option and doesn't require any bank account. Bring a valid photo ID and the reference number, and you can collect cash at any MoneyGram agent location.

How long does it take to receive a MoneyGram transfer?

Cash pickup is usually available within ten minutes of the sender's payment clearing. Bank deposits take a few hours to three business days. Mobile wallet pickups typically post within minutes.

What if my name on the transfer doesn't match my ID exactly?

Go to the location anyway, but call ahead. Small discrepancies (a missing middle name, a Sr./Jr. mismatch) are sometimes resolved at the counter. If the names are clearly different, the sender will need to amend or cancel and resend the transfer.

Is there a limit on how much I can receive in cash?

Most MoneyGram agent locations cap cash payouts between $1,000 and $7,500 per transaction, depending on local rules and how much cash the location has on hand. Larger amounts may need to be split or sent as a bank deposit.
